Electoral Commission in Serbia rejects opposition call for election annulment

The Republican Election Commission (RKZ) announced on December 29th that it rejected opposition coalition opposition “Serbia against violence” (SPN) for canceling the elections held on December 17th. As he said The RKZ, that list for elections in the city of Belgrade, is not authorised to apply to the Republican Election Commission, Beta broadcasts.

RKZ Deputy Chairman Marko Jankovovic has said the complaint has been handed over by authorised Belgrade listrs to the City Election Commission, which has been declared uncompetent and sent to the Republican Election Commission for decision.

He has stated that Serbia's “against violence” has filed complaints at the Supreme Court in Belgrade, which has decided to reject it as unfounded, since the City Election Commission is not really competent on the issue.

He added that Serbia's “against violence” called for the annulment of all countries under the jurisdiction of the commission, starting, as he said, from the “evidence that elections were held in an atmosphere of serious violation of the rules and that the whole process was illegal”.

Several members of the Republican Election Commission proposed that this institution be declared uncompetent because the complaint has been submitted to the City Election Commission and that this institution must decide since the context is clear that only the city elections are meant.

Serbia's largest opposition list “against violence” accused the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), which is the ruling party, of stealing after the elections.

Since then, protests have been held on the streets of Belgrade, demanding cancellation of the results and repetition of elections, some of its leaders are on hunger strike, as well as student organisations have organised protests.

Doubts of election irregularities also voiced the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), which on December 18th reported that the elections were marked with major irregularities, misuse of public funds, media dominance by President Aleksandar Vuciq, negative campaign and widespread fear.

Also, part of the eurodeputs demanded an independent investigation into all irregularities reported during elections held in Serbia on 17 December.

The United States of America also called on authorities in Serbia to investigate the claims of international observers. / REL/
