US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will leave for Israel on Wednesday on a mission to the Middle East to prevent the outbreak of a broader war after an attack and the capture of hostages by Hamas militants and Israeli bombings in the Gaza Strip.
In a solidarity show with Washington's closest ally in the Middle East, Blinken will meet senior Israeli officials, perhaps including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to discuss further boosting military support.
It will work with US regional allies in an effort to ensure the release of more than 100 people Israel says Hamas holds them captive, some of whom may be American citizens.
Hamas' armed men attacked Israeli cities over the weekend, killing 1,200 people and taking numerous hostages in Gaza. Israel has responded to air strikes that have killed more than 1,000 people in Hamas-dominated Gaza while preparing for a possible ground offensive, Reuters writes.
