Serbian President Aleksandar Vuciq has said on September 21st in New York that Serbia supports the territorial integrity of all UN member states, including Ukraine.
In his speech to the UN General Assembly, Vucic has said Serbia “has acted responsibly and seriously” in this regard.
“We are looking for a clear answer to the question that I have asked my colleagues, the leaders of many countries for years, what is the difference between the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Ukraine, and Serbia's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as it has faced serious wrongdoing, which many of you have given international recognition and legitimacy. I've never received a rational answer to this question from no one”, Vucic declared.
His statement has been a reference to Kosovo, which has declared independence in 2008.
Serbia does not recognise Kosovo's citizenship and blocks membership in international organisations by supporting Russia and China.
Vucic has said during his speech that Serbia “with patience and much readiness will continue to seek compromise” with Kosovo in negotiations mediating the European Union in Brussels.
“compromis is the only way to achieve long-term peace. We have already exhausted all other options and are not thinking of going back to the path of war and blood”, Vucic said.
According to him, the Balkan region cannot bear another conflict.
The Serbian president has stressed that Belgrade is conducting negotiations “under complex conditions, with elements of a hybrid war and dirty campaign on the part of the international public”.
“is enough to remind you of a global media report that Serbia will attack neighbours, and pose a threat to regional stability. Of course, something like that has never happened, and there has been only one of the series of lies against the Republic of Serbia”, he has said.
According to him, the principle of border invisibility must be applied to all states.
Kosovo's independence is recognised by the United States and most European Union states, as opposed to some parts of Ukraine that are under the control of pro-Russian separatists.
The International Court of Justice in The Hague has said that Kosovo's 2008 declaration of independence is not a violation of international law.
He has mentioned that some Western Balkan states have overcome many barriers that have existed among peoples for many years.
As an example, he has said that “Serbia and Albania, today, have the closest and most friendly relations in history”, and that along with Northern Macedonia, the three countries have established the initiative, the Open Balkans.
The initiative, the Open Balkans, is the continuation of the Balkan Mini-Shengen, presented in Novi Sad of Serbia on 10 October 2019.
Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro are not part of it.
The Open Balkans are said to be aiming to enable free movement of people, goods and services in the Western Balkans region.
So far several agreements have been signed that learn to facilitate movement among states.
Despite undisputed economic benefits, the initiative has broader dimensions, connects people with different cultures and promotes diversity. In this way, Serbia aims to contribute peace, stability and reconciliation to the region”, Vucic has said.
Serbia has not imposed sanctions on Russia for the war launched in Ukraine at the end of February, but has sentenced Russia several times through UN voting.
Serbia is a state dependent on Russian gas, and polls show strong support for the Serbian population for Russia, despite the fact that this state accepts the greatest assistance from the West.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the invasion of Ukraine on 24 February.
He calls the war <x0 special military operation” to demilitarise Ukraine. The West has responded to Russia, striking the economy of this state with severe sanctions.
As a result of the war, thousands have died, and millions of others have been displaced from their homes.
