Von der Leeyen says that last week, Russia escalated Ukraine's invasion to a completely new level through mobilisation and false referenda that are an illegal attempt to seize land and change international borders by force.
“The EU is determined to make the Kremlin pay with a new package of austerity sanctions against Russia”, says von der Leyen.
It aims to further limit trade to isolate and limit Russia's economy even more: “A new comprehensive ban on the import of Russian products would keep them out of the European market and would deprive Russia of an additional 7 billion-euro income”.
The EU will expand the list of products that cannot be exported to Russia, especially in terms of weapons, aircraft and chemical substances.
This will weaken its capacity to modernise the Russian military base”, she has said.
Von der Leyen also says that according to the package, EU citizens would be barred from landing in the government bodies of Russian state-owned enterprises, saying: “Russia should not benefit from EU knowledge and expertise”.
