Putin declares independence of two regions in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared “independence” of the Ukrainian regions of Zaporizija and Kherson, as Russia prepares to officially declare annexing Ukrainian territory in a major escalation of its seven-month occupation. “
“I order recognition of the state's sovereignty and independence” of Zaporizija and Kherson in southern Ukraine, Putin said in presidential decrees issued late Thursday.
The two regions will be included in Russia along with the self-declared republics of Donetsk and Luhansk at a luxury ceremony in the Kremlin on Friday following the hastily organised referenda in Russia's occupied regions, which claimed the majority to up to 99 per cent. in favor of joining Russia. Putin recognised “independence” of Donetsk and Luhansk in February.
