The eastern region of Donbas was the focus of the Russian invasion since the first day of the offensive. According to Putin, Russian-speaking residents in the industrialized region were undergoing genocide on the part of Ukraine.
Several parts of the Donbas region have been under Russian separatist control since 2014.
