Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was greeting supporters outside her house when a man came out of the crowd and pointed a gun in his face.
President Alberto Fernandez said the gun was loaded with five bullets, but it didn't fire.
Police said the gunman, whom local media identified as a 35-year-old Brazilian, has been arrested. They're trying to reveal the motive of the attack.
Addressing the nation late Thursday night, Fernandez said: “Cristina is alive because, for a still non-confirmed reason, the weapon, which contained five bullets, did not fire”.
He said attempting the life of Mrs. de Kirchner was one of the most serious “ ” incidents since the country returned to democracy in 1983.
“We may disagree, we may have deep disagreements, but hate speech cannot happen because it fuels violence and there is no chance that violence can co-exist with democracy”, Fernandez said.
He also announced a national holiday Friday to give the Argentinians time to “cut in defense of life, democracy and solidarity with our vice president”.
The images spread in local media showed the man aiming for a gun away from her head and seemed to be trying to shoot. Then she sat down, but there was no shot.
Mrs. de Kirchner is in the middle of a corruption trial and is returning from the court. She denies the accusations. /A2 CNN
