Armenia's prime minister, Nikola Pasinyan, said 49 of her soldiers died in the night-long clashes, while the Azerbaijann Defence Ministry said 50 of its soldiers were also killed.
Neighboring countries have fought two wars and have seen smaller and smaller clashes for three decades.
On Tuesday, Russia said it brokered a ceasefire for the latest blast.
Armenia initially said the fighting had calmed down rather than complete. Later, Azerbaijan said it had completed its goals after “tested” by its neighbour.
At the heart of the dispute is the Nagorno-Karabakh region. It is, according to internationally recognised borders, part of Azerbaijan, but is populated by ethnic Armenians, the BBC reports.
Cultural division extends beyond politics in religion, too: Armenia is a predominantly Christian country, while Azerbaijan is mostly Muslim.
The two countries were part of the Soviet Union before its breakup in late 1991.
The dispute has led to large-scale war in the 1980s and 1990s, a six-week war in 2020 and continuing clashes for decades. /Abcnews.al/
