Denmark's Justice Ministry explains about Periscope misunderstanding for 300 rented cells in Gjilan

An agreement signed in December last year between the Ministry of Law of Kosovo and Denmark for 300 rented cells for the Danish state, of which Kosovo would benefit over 200m euros, media reports last days that it has failed. From the Danish Foreign Ministry and [...]
Kosovo's “300 prison cells are given at the use of the state of Denmark, where prisoners in this state will serve the sentence in Kosovo”.
This agreement was signed on 20 December last year in Pristina by Denmark's Justice Minister Nick Hakkkerup and Kosovo Justice Minister Albulen Haxhiu.
“This is a good sign that Denmark recognises how prisoners are treated in the Republic of Kosovo, because previously it has become an assessment of how states, especially those of the Western Balkans, treat the prisoners, how they respect their rights, and Kosovo has emerged among countries that mostly respect the rights of prisoners, because it is obviously a heavy burden even for Denmark to send to a country where the rights of prisoners are not respected”, Minister Haxhiu said after the signing of the agreement.
But, German media “Süddeutsche Zeitung” had written that this agreement is being sharply criticised by human rights activists. Because it's the poor conditions in Kosovo prisons, where the Council of Europe's anti-Tourtity “CPT, in 2020, documented allegations of corruption and mistreatment”.
Meanwhile, days ago it was reported that Denmark has suspended agreement with Kosovo for prisons
The suspension of this agreement was reported as a result of financial cartels, the Danish medium, extrabladet, reported, according to the Association of Prisons.
But after these reports, Periscope He contacted the Ministry of Justice to learn more.
The Danish ministry's official response is that the “agreement between Denmark and Kosovo has not been cut off” and that <x2 reports that say otherwise are based on misunderstanding”.
“Dianmarca has not stopped, has not cancelled, or suspended the prison agreement between Kosovo and Denmark. Any kind of media report that says otherwise is based on misunderstandings. A large majority of Denmark's parliament has approved the agreement and co-operation with Kosovo earlier this year in planning and realising the project is continuing”, they said. Under the deal, foreign prisoners will be sent to a prison in the city of Gjilan early in 2023. After they have suffered the sentence, they will be expelled from Kosovo.
The deal has a ten-year extension and Kosovo is expected to benefit 210m euros. /Periscope
