This is not the first time that Beden appears beyond the long approach of the US “strategic maturity” when it comes to protecting Taiwan. Biden said the US would intervene militarily if China tried to take Taiwan by force. The White House has been quick to downplay Beden's earlier comments on Taiwan, repeating that US politics has not changed.
Taiwan extends less than 110 miles (177 km) off the coast of China. For more than 70 years, both sides have been governed separately, but this has not prevented China's ruling Communist Party from claiming the island as its own, despite never having controlled it.
Chinese leader Xi Jinping has said the “reunification” between China and Taiwan is inevitable and has refused to rule out using force. Tensions between Beijing and Taipei are at the highest level they have been in recent decades, with the Chinese army conducting major military exercises near the island.
