Voldymyr Zelensky has said the world was on the verge of a <x0 disaster from radiation” after the last regular line of electricity supplied to the Ukraine nuclear power plant Zaporizhja, controlled by Russia, was restored several hours after the ongoing attacks, writes The Guardian.
Ukrainian president said officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN nuclear overseer, should be granted urgent access to the country. Zelensky blamed the bombings Thursday by the Russian military that shut down the reactor complex, the largest such facility in Europe, from the power grid.
He said spare oil generators provided electricity supplies and kept the plant secure.
If our staff hadn't reacted after power cuts, then we would have been faced with a radiation disaster, he said in a speech.
“Russia has put Ukraine and all Europeans in a situation one step away from a disaster from radiation”.
