Twitter suspends Serbian embassies' accounts in several states

Serbia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on August 22nd that the accounts of Serbian embassies in Armenia, Iran, Indonesia, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Ghana and Kuwait, but also of the General Consulate in Chicago, have been suspended on August 18th. According to this ministry, the suspension of accounts “was made without any clarification and without any notice [...]
According to this ministry, the suspension of accounts “took place without any clarification and without any preliminary notice that would indicate any possible violation of communication rules on this social network”.
Serbia's MPJ said that “this is unacceptable to the diplomatic missions of a democratic state that is not subject to any sanctions”.
Some of the suspended accounts were recently opened and were not active, while others have no content that could be considered inappropriate”, the statement said.
The Foreign Ministry said Serbia is committed to membership in the European Union and respects freedoms “according to the highest European standards”.
The “is absurd for a number of our diplomatic and consular missions to be censored in the social media that promotes democracy and plurality of thought”, the report said.
Serbia has asked the Twitter company to unlock these accounts. The Serbian Foreign Ministry also said it hopes suspending the “account is not part of efforts to silence Serbia in the fight for truth”, separately for the Kosovo-related situation.
Tensions between Kosovo and Serbia rose after 31 July and 1 August, local Serbs blocked roads in northern Kosovo to reject the government's decision in Pristina on Serb license plates and documents.
Free Europe Radio has sent questions to the Twitter company, but from this company have not responded immediately to statements by Serbia's MPJ.
On August 18th, Twitter had suspended the accounts of dozens of former deputies and current members of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, but also of a government official.
On August 19th, Twitter told REL that they have opened accounts and that the suspension was due by mistake.
