These exercises are held as tensions in the Korean Peninsula are high.
A South Korean Defence Ministry spokesman has confirmed that the exercises have been launched as planned, but has not indicated that soldiers have been involved in what military equipment has been used.
The United States has some 28,500 soldiers stationed in South Korea as a precaution against threats coming from North Korea.
Training that started Monday includes training through computer simulations, joint field exercises, and civil protection exercises in South Korea.
They are expected to end on September 1st.
North Korean leadership often accuses the United States of preparing for attack through joint military exercises with South Korea.
Washington and Seoul reject something like this and believe the exercises are intended to improve defence capacities.
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula are high as the northeasterns have conducted several times missile testing with nuclear capacities.
The US and South Korea have reduced the number of military exercises in recent years, for diplomatic reasons.
With 2018, summer exercises have been cancelled with the goal of increasing opportunities for negotiations over the North Korean nuclear programme.
However, the talks are blocked by a failed summit between the US and North Korea, which was held in February 2019 in Vietnam.
UN Security Council resolutions forbid North Korea's ballistic missile tests or other nuclear trials.
