He has faced years of death threats to his Satanic script, which some Muslims view as blasphemy.
The person charged with Friday's attack has been declared innocent of attempted murder and has been placed in custody without parole.
Hades Matar, 24, is accused of appearing and stabbed Mr. Rushdie at least 10 times in the face, neck, and stomach. After the attack, writer Andrew's public agent Wilie said that the novelist had suffered sharp nerves on one arm, liver damage, and likely lost an eye.
Henry Reese, who was supposed to interview Mr. Rushdie during the event, suffered a slight head injury. He is cofounder of a nonprofit organisation that provides shelter for exiled writers under threat of persecution.
Before the attack, Mr. Rushdie was ready to give a speech about how the United States served as a paradise for such writers. Romancier was forced to hide for nearly 10 years after the issue of Satanic Verses in 1988.
Many Muslims reacted furiously to him, arguing that portrayal of the Prophet Muhammad was a serious insult to their faith. He faced death threats, and then Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruholah Khomenin issued a fetus or decree HINA calling for the murder of Mr. Rushdie, placing a $3 million reward on the author's head.
