Reasons for Nancy Peloss visit to Taiwan
In an opinion published in the Washington Post, Pelosi has shown the reasons for her visit to Taiwan, and shortly after arriving in this state she praised Taiwan's commitment to democratic governance, while criticising China that it has dramatically raised tensions with Taiwan in recent years.
She said the Act of Reports with Taiwan, signed 43 years ago, defines America's commitment to democratic Taiwan, “providing the framework for economic and diplomatic reports that would soon be strengthened in a key partnership”.
Pelosi said this document includes the US's “solemn commitment” to support Taiwan's defence. According to this act, Washington considers every attempt to determine Taiwan's future by means other than peaceful ones would be “a threat to peace and security in the Western Pacific and would present great concern for the US”.
According to her, the US should remember this oath as Taiwan democracy is now threatened by China.
Beijing has increased patrols with drones, bombers and other fighter planes, Pelosi said. He has also carried out dozens of cyber attacks on Taiwanese government agencies and is pressuring countries in the world to break off reports with the island.
In the opinion published in the Washington Post, Pelosi cited China's <x0 ... brutal impression” on dydence in Hong Kong and the treatment of Muslims and other minorities, whom the United States calls genocide.
“We cannot stay without action as the Chinese Communist Party threatens Taiwan and democracy”, Pelosi said.
She said that while Russia is continuing the presumption and illegal fight against Ukraine, killing thousands of innocent people including children it is essential that America and the allies make it clear that we will never surrender to the Ottomans”.
After visiting Taiwan, Pelosi will visit Japan and South Korea. /rel
