Insects are seriously damaging Dukagjin forests

Some of the barren forests in the Dukagjin region have been damaged by insects that cause forest disease. Kosovo Forest Agency officials have said the disease is caused by the pine moth, which poses a serious threat to the country's forest mass. Kosovo forests are the most precious treasure of [...]
Kosovo forests are the country's most precious treasure thanks to relief, climate and hydrography, which made them more precious and attractive. The pine (procesionary) moth is affecting the successive drying of pine trees.
Menderes Ibra, director of the Kosovo Forest Management Directorate at the Forests Agency, explains for “Radio Kosova” that in the region of the Dukagjini pine has done damage, but not in large size, as in Albania. Ibra says that there have been some isolated cases but that the edge of the pine is more pronounced.
We have isolated cases. We have surfaces affected by another damage, but the edge of the pine is more exposed. In the municipality of Gjakova, Yunik, Decani, in a part in Suhareka and Prizren. But these currently do not present serious concern”, he said.
Over the past years, several operations have been undertaken for mechanical cleaning of a pinecone, with few results. Menderes Ibra says the disappearance of a pine can is quite complex.
It is fought in three ways. It is a physical mechanical way of removing rotten wood parts and lighting them with insect larvae. If the surfaces are large, the treatment is made with pesticides. There is also a new form that has begun to apply in several neighbouring states, especially in Turkey, which is the biological way of fighting it. So, a bug has been cultivated that is a biological enemy of the pine tank”, he added.
Forests in Kosovo have a wide flora and wildlife that matters to the entire Balkan region. Kosovo's gold represents about 25 %s of the Balkan and European flora. The highest variety region is the Sharr Mountains and the Albanian Alps.
