At least 37 people have died from floods in eastern Kentucky, while the region is preparing for more rainfall.
At least six children, including four brothers and sisters, between one and eight years of age, are among the dead, writes the BBC, broadcast Klankosova.tv.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said that the death toll will continue to rise, as hundreds more have disappeared.
More than 12,000 families have remained without electricity, and hundreds of homes and businesses have been flooded.
The damage to roads, bridges and infrastructure will cost millions to repair, the governor said Monday.
US President Joe Biden has declared the floods “a major disaster” and ordered federal assistance to help local rescuers.
