The first by EU energy sanctions against Russia was the ban on buying coal. Russia's oil import ban is expected to take effect in December.
Russia is the country that exported most coal to EU countries, about 25 percent of its exports to Europe.
On the other hand, EU countries 45 percent of total coal imports and 70 percent of thermal coal used in electricity production is made up of Russia.
According to Russian Energy Ministry data, Russia sold 48.7 million tonnes of coal to the EU in 2021.
