EU foreign ministers plan to make that decision at a two-day meeting in Prague starting Tuesday, the Financial Times reports citing three sources that participated in the talks.
It's inappropriate for Russian tourists to walk in our cities. We must send a signal to the Russian population that this war is unacceptable, it is unacceptable”, a senior EU official said.
The plan to suspend the 2007 agreement calls for an end to preferential treatment for Russians when applying for all EU visas.
We are in an extraordinary situation, and this takes extraordinary steps. We want to go further than suspending visa facilities”, a senior European official said.
Finland, Poland and the Baltic states on the border with Russia have said they are prepared to prevent the Russians from entering their territory with tourist visas, citing national security exemptions from the Schengen agreement.
“I hope a common European solution will be found on how to significantly limit the influx of Russian tourists to Europe,”, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said.
