Former American President Donald Trump has asked a judge to freeze the justice department's investigation into classified files from his home in Mar-a-Lago.
In a lawsuit, his legal team requested that an independent lawyer be appointed to oversee documents FBI agents received earlier this month. Eleven classified file groups were seized from Trump's property in Florida on August 8th, according to the FBI. Trump is being investigated for possible misuse of documents.
The American presidents should transfer all their documents and emails to a government agency called National Archives, and the FBI is investigating whether Trump has been mishandling the data by taking them from the White House to Mar-a- Lago after leaving office in January 2021.
He has denied any wrongdoing and said the items were declassified, the BBC writes, conveys Clankosova. tv
In the 27-page document deposited in a Florida court, Trump's legal team accuses the justice department of research: “simply want the camel's nose under the tent so that they can seek constructive documents politically or support efforts to prevent President Trump from running again. President Donald J Trump is the clear leader in the 2024 Republican primary presidential election and in the 2024 general elections, if he decides to run. Law enforcement is a shield protecting Americans and cannot be used as a weapon for political purposes”, the statement said.
The justice department said in a brief statement that prosecutors were aware of Trump's indictment and would respond to the court. The Mar-a-Lago research order was authorized by a federal court after the possible cause's required find”, spokesman Anthony Coley said.
It comes after the New York Times reported Monday that agents had so far found over 300 documents classified by Trump, including material from the CIA, the National Security Agency and the FBI.
Trump is charging for a more detailed list of what was taken from his wealth and is demanding that the government return everything that was not in the object of the search order.
