The urgent statement by Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becherra will help mobilise more resources to combat the explosion, which has spread rapidly since health authorities in Boston confirmed the first case in the US in May. The last time the U.S. declared a public health emergency was in response to David-19 in January 2020.
The United States has confirmed more than 6,600 cases of monkey smallpox in 48 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico since Thursday, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The actual number of infections is likely to be higher than official data, because patients can be tested only after having a fry, which can last a week or more after initial exposure to the virus.
“In light of all these developments and developing circumstances in the field, I want to announce today that I will declare a public health emergency,” told reporters during a call Thursday. /Abcnews.al/
