The Ministry of Defence in China has said 17 August that participation in joint exercises “does not relate to the current situation in the region and the world”.
This stance is seen as reference to Russia's war in Ukraine.
The exercises are part of the <x0 dispute on annual co-operation”, it is said in the statement.
Similar military exercises between the two countries led by Russia have been held in the past.
The “The aim is to deepen pragmatic co-operation among the armies of the participating countries, increase the level of strategic co-operation among the participating parties, and deepen the ability to respond to various security threats”, is said in the statement.
China is among the states that have not imposed sanctions on Russia for Moscow's unprohibited attack on Ukraine.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has told his Chinese counterpart last month that he rejects China's claims that he is neutral in the conflict in Ukraine.
He has also said Washington “is concerned about bringing China closer to Russia”.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the invasion of Ukraine on 24 February.
He calls the war <x0 special military operation” to demilitarise Ukraine.
The West has responded to Russia, striking the economy of this state with severe sanctions.
