“Bota is just one step away from a devastating nuclear war”. So said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres as he added that we are currently in danger that has not been seen since the Cold War.
We've been extremely lucky so far. Amid increasing global tensions, mankind is only one step away from nuclear annihilation. International tensions are reaching new”, he said.
Warnings by the top UN official came at the opening of a conference for countries signed in the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.
The 1968 agreement was introduced after the Cuban missile crisis, an event often portrayed as the closest the world has ever come to nuclear war.
The treaty was designed to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons to more countries and to pursue the ultimate goal of full nuclear disarmament.
Almost every nation on Earth has signed the agreement. However, India, Israel, North Korea and Pakistan refuse to sign this agreement, even though these countries are known or suspected of nuclear weapons.
