A cyberattack that temporarily closed many digital services of the Albanian government and the internet site in mid-July is likely the work of pro-Girania hackers aiming to disrupt the conference of an Iranian opposition group in Albania, announced on Thursday 'Mandiantão one of the leading American companies dealing with cyber security issues.
In one report, the company expresses a prudent belief that the attackers had acted in favour of Tehran's efforts against dissidents, based on several factors: the time, content published in a social media channel used to take responsibility for the attacks on this nature and similarities to the code of the virus program, which has long been used to hit speakers in Farsi and Arabic
July 23rd and July 24th conference by Iranian opposition group Mujahedeen - Of -Khalq was cancelled following warnings by local authorities for a possible terrorist threat. About 3,000 Iranian dissidents of this group, mainly known as the MEK, live at Camp Ashraf 3 in Manza, 30km from Albania's capital, Tirana.
The World meeting of Free Iran was to be held in the camp, and American lawmakers were among the guests.
A group calling itself “Homeland Justice” took responsibility for cyberattack, using viruses targeting extortion for financial purposes but being used more and more for political purposes, especially from Iran.
Password from “HomeLand Justice” was made into a Telegram app channel, in which documents allegedly issued were residence permits in Albania of MEK members, along with motion pictures showing the virus program being activated. The channel claimed corruption in the Albanian government and used hashtag, including #Manza.
This event poses an active threat to public and private organisations in other NATO member states”, the American company said. “While negotiations about Iran's nuclear agreement have stalled, it shows Iran may be less restrained in conducting ongoing cyber attacks”.
A few days ago, the Albanian government said the hackers' approach was identical to last year's attacks in other NATO states, including Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Belgium.
Iran's mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to a request for comments made Thursday. / VOA/
