Iranian citizen Shahram Poorsafi, also known as Mehdi Rezayi, “tried to pay several individuals in the United States $300,000 to commit murder in Washington or in Maryland”, the Justice Department said.
The Justice Department said that Poorsafi was likely motivated to kill Mr. Bolton in retaliation for the death of Qassem Solejman, a commander of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard killed in a US fearful attack in January 2020.
According to the criminal report, Poursaf asked an American resident identified only as “andivedvid A” to take pictures of Mr. Bolton, claiming that he needed the photos for a book.
The U.S. resident then introduced Poorsaff to a secret government informant who could take pictures for a certain price.
Investigators said the following month, Poursaf contacted the informant in an app where coded messages were sent and offered the person $250,000 to engage someone to eliminate” Mr. Bolton. That amount then amounted to $300,000.
In a statement published on the social network on Wednesday, Mr. Bolton thanked the Justice Department for the measures taken.
“cannot be said very publicly now, but one thing is indisputable: Iranian rulers are liars, terrorists and enemies of the United States”, he said. (Voe)
