The Kosovo Assembly, weeks ago, adopted the Second Law on Population Recording, Homes and Family Economics in Kosovo. Within this process, which is expected to begin soon, Kosovo Department of Social Statistics Director Avni Kastrati told Kosovo Radio, of this process, this institution has made all necessary preparations” and that within a few months the census is expected to begin.
“The law on census in Kosovo has been passed in July on second reading. Under the law certain activities or decisions are defined that must be made by the government and the assembly. The date should be set for the start of the census on the part of the government, and on the part of the assembly the Central Commission for Population Recording” must be approved, Kastrati said.
According to Kastrati, this process, planned earlier, has been postponed due to some procedures that have had to be passed, so as such, it is warned to begin farther away in the spring of next year.
“Discussions have been ongoing about this process, but as an official document there was no specific date. The objective was 2022, that the year 2021 has been the pandemic challenge where even at the beginning of 2022 this situation has followed us and because some decisions that had to be made with this process to begin in the spring of next year”, he added.
Population registration is scheduled to reach the entire territory of Kosovo, including the northern part of the country, which formerly residents of Serb majority municipalities had refused. The last census in Kosovo was done in 2011. Of this process, the total number of residents in Kosovo is estimated to be around 1.8 million.
