Experts in Scotland's National Gallery made the discovery when the telajo was X-rayed in front of an exhibition.
The hidden export was covered by sticky layers and cardboard on the back of a previous work called the head of a peasant woman.
The old consultant of the Lesley Stevenson Gallery said she felt <x0-thermit” when she found the artist “looking to us”.
She said: “When we first saw X-rays, we were certainly extremely excited.
This is a significant discovery because it adds to what we already know about Van Gogh's life. ”
The Dutch artist often reused canvass to save money, turning them and then working on the other side.
