Thousands of people went down to the capital, Columbus, calling on Mr. Rajapaksa to resign after months of protests to mismanage an economic crisis.
Mr. Rajapak will resign on July 13th. Prime Minister Wickreminghe has agreed to resign.
Parliament Speaker Mahida Aeyardana said the president was resigning “to ensure a peaceful transition”.
