President Gotabaya Rajapasa said he would leave on 13 July, according to an announcement made by parliament speaker Saturday.
But the president himself was neither seen nor made a public statement.
Thousands of people went down to Columbus on Saturday, demanding his resignation after months of protests.
The president has been blamed for the country's economic mismanagement, which has caused a lack of food, fuel and medicines for months.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickreminghe also said he would withdraw after Saturday's protests, as a result of which his private residence was burned.
But protesters remain sceptical about the leaders' intentions.
“Our war is not over,” student protest leader Lahiru Weerasekara said.
We will not give up this war until President Rajapapasa actually leaves,” he said.
Political leaders will hold further meetings to discuss a calm transition of power Sunday, BBC writes
