Determined to see the country's top leaders resign amid an unprecedented economic crisis, thousands of people attacked the president's residence Saturday and later set the prime minister's house on fire, forcing both leaders to hide, reports Al Jazeera.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickreminghe said he would leave office once a new government is established, while Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said President Gotabaya Rajapasa, 73, would withdraw as president Wednesday.
But protesters are refusing to move until both leaders have officially left their posts.
“Our war has not ended”, student leader Lahiru Weerasekara told reporters Sunday.
We will not give up this war until it actually leaves”.
