The country's president, Vjosa Osmani and Prime Minister Albin Kurti, with his two deputies, are at an extraordinary meeting with US Ambassador to Kosovo Jeff Havenier.
The news was confirmed by Bekim Cupina, adviser to President Osmani.
Prime Minister Kurti has addressed the people earlier, after setting up barricades north of the country.
He said the riots are encouraging Serbian President Aleksandar Vuciq and his subordinate, who heads a so-called office for Kosovo, Petar Petkovic.
A few minutes ago President Osmani reacted. She says Kosovo police are working without stopping it from guaranteeing law enforcement and freedom of movement. She has also indicated that actions are being taken in co-ordination with international partners.
Kosovo police have reportedly closed border crossings in Brnjak and Jarinje, due to roadblocks that lead to these two points. The roadblocks in trucks began north an hour after the city's alarm was sounded.
The government of the Republic of Kosovo has announced that on August 1st the decision on reciprocity with Serbia will go into effect on recognising the documents. Tensions began hours before the decision went into effect.
From Monday to Kosovo, Serbian citizens presenting ID documents issued by Serbia at the border will be equipped with a document “access/ex1>. This document will be issued at all ground and air crossings and will be valid for 90 days, just as the document Serbian authorities issue to Kosovo citizens when they enter Serbia.
