Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was present despite objections from Western and Japanese leaders. Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimas Hayashi did not attend in expectation, in protest of Lavrov's presence.
However, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Lavrov would leave the meeting early after holding bilateral talks and addressing the press.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi called for a negotiated end to the war in Ukraine, reports DW, broadcast Klankosova.tv.
It is our responsibility to end the war as soon as possible and to resolve our differences at the negotiating table, not on the battlefield”, Marsud said at the opening of the talks.
Several Western ministers, including German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, have ruled out the possibility of meeting with the Kremlin's top diplomat. They boycotted a dinner held Thursday evening because of Lavrov's presence.
