The first round to replace Boris Johnson won Richie Sunak. Sunnak has won the first round of elections for the conservative leadership, while Jeremy Hunt and Nedhim Zahawi were eliminated.
According to reportsSunak won 88 votes, while Penny Mor Ashdown received 67 votes. Liz Truss, the foreign secretary, was third with 50 votes, only 10 votes ahead of Kemi Badenoch, who had 40. Tom Tugend, foreign policy expert, had 37 votes, and Suella Braverman, the general prosecutor, managed to get 32.
Nadhim Zahawi, Chancellor and Jeremy Hunt, the former foreign secretary, both failed to capture the 30-vote threshold required to move to the next round. Zahawi received 25 votes and Hunt only 18, less than 20 nominations that helped him in the vote.
A second vote will be held tomorrow, which will be followed by a third on Monday until candidates are reduced and then two people will remain. The last two will go to the polls before conservative members.
