On July 14th, the American Congress House of Representatives adopted the resolution in the case of the murder of the Bytyqi brothers in 1999. The news was published on the American Congress website.
In the resolution proposed by the Commission for Foreign Affairs on 29 July last year, the Congress's stance says that “should bring to justice those responsible for the murders of American citizens in Serbia, Agron, Yll and Mehmet Bytyqi in July 1999”, and that the US should ensure sufficient resources to assist and fully monitor Serbia's efforts to investigate and prosecute such individuals. ”
According to Resolution point two, it is unacceptable that no individual has ever been convicted of killing the Bytyqi brothers, or of any other crime related to their murder, and that no individual currently faces charges on these crimes.
At the resolution's point three words are that the government of Serbia, its respective ministries and services, including Serbia's War Crimes Prosecutor, should give priority to investigation and prosecution as soon as possible by current or previous officials believed to be responsible for their murder.
The US “United States must provide sufficient resources to help fully and properly monitor the efforts of the government of Serbia, its ministries and relevant offices to investigate and prosecute as soon as possible those believed to be responsible for their deaths, directly or indirectly.”, said at the fourth point of the resolution.
At its fifth or final point, the US stresses that progress in clarifying this case or failing to comply should be an important factor determining the further development of relations between the US and Serbia.
The resolution was proposed by New York State Republican Congressman Lee Zeldin and 423 congressmen voted in favour of the resolution, one opposed, while six did not vote.
The Agron brothers, Mehmet and Yll Bytyqi, originating from Kosovo, were arrested in 1999 in Serbia because, as then Serbian officials have said, illegal border crossing.
They were released from prison after being convicted and then killed.
Their troops were found in a mass grave near Petrovo Selos in eastern Serbia in 2001.
Two police officers accused of helping liquidate the Bytyqi brothers, Sreten Popovovic and Milos Stojanovic have been acquitted at the Supreme Court's decision in Belgrade for war crimes.
The court has said there is no evidence of their involvement in the killings committed in July 1999.
Serbia's President Aleksandar Vuciq has stated in February 2019 that killing the Bytyqi brothers is a serious crime and that Serbia is doing everything it takes to investigate the case. / REL
