Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been shot twice while giving a speech in the town of Nara.
The second shot hit him in the back, knocked him down. According to reports, the attacker was immediately arrested, the BBC writes.
Following this attack that troubled reactions among world leaders, additional security measures were taken for Japan's current prime minister, Fumio Kishida, who immediately stopped the election campaign and left for Tokyo.

Shinzo Abe was the longest-lived Japanese prime minister after World War II. Abe served as head of government from 2006 to 2007, and from 2012 to 2020, when he also resigned because of health complications. His mandate passed that of his grandfather Nobusuke Kishi, who led Japan from 1957 to 1960. His father, Shintaro, also served as chief secretary of the cabinet, the country's second most powerful position. Abe was 67 years old.
