In an interview for Reuters, Pope Francescu said on July 4th that “had never occurred to me to plan retirement at the end of summer, though he reiterated that he could leave one day in the way Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI did in 2013.
The pope had planned to visit Congo and South Sudan this week, but he had to cancel his trip because the doctors recommended it for more therapy on an injured knee.
He said he plans to travel to Canada on July 24th-30th and said he hopes to visit Russia and Ukraine after that.
After these comments, Ukraine renewed its invitation to Francecescu to visit Ukraine and asked the pope to continue praying for the Ukrainian people.
“It is time to deepen ties with those who sincerely want”, Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleh Nikolenko said.
“We renew the invitation to Pope Francis to visit our country and encourage you to continue praying for Ukrainian people”.
