Opposition to back MCC agreement in Parliament

The Kosovo government has approved the Bill for Ratification of the Millennium Challenge Compact Agreement and the Programme Implementation Agreement between the Republic of Kosovo and the United States of America, represented by the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC). This agreement is expected to be submitted for approval. Unlike some other international agreements of [...]
The 234m-dollar Kompack programme will include two projects: reserves and energy arbitration, batteries with a high capacity of over 200MW, and development of the workforce and the inclusion of women in the energy sector.
MP The PDK, the largest opposition party, Mergim Lushtaku, will support the MCC agreement because it is in the best interests of the country. He said it is good that the Government of Kosovo has reflected and is supporting projects that have once been criticised.
We have, basically, supported any international support in terms of the strategic part of investments that improve the lives of citizens, the life of businesses in Kosovo, but also the entire life of Kosovo as an independent state. We welcome any cooperation and continued contract with the MCC. Of course, we are pleased that the Government of Kosovo is also reflecting and supporting projects that are in the best interests of Kosovo citizens, when we know that until yesterday these agreements have been criticised and imposed in another form”, he told Kosovas.
Alliance for the Future of Kosovo MP, simultaneously a member of the Commission for Buzhet, Paul Lekaj, said they would support the agreement regardless of whether it should have been approved, according to him, as early as 2019.
“As far as the MCC agreement is concerned is an agreement contributing to Kosovo, especially in the energy sector, and we as the Alliance of the Future of Kosovo strongly support it because it has come at an appropriate time. But every time we have insisted since 2019 that the agreement with the MCC be approved, it is signed, but there are almost three years behind delays. But it is never too late when it benefits Kosovo”, Lekaj said of Kosova Preris.
While LVV deputy Armend Muja said he expects the support of all parties for this agreement. He said there have been many speculations about the same, but the approach has been careful and already investment will be made in the sector where the need is greater.
This agreement has been concluded, with the spirit of co-operation and long-term strategic partnership. The United States of America has made an essential contribution to the energy sector. There have been many discussions, speculations about this agreement, that the approach has been careful, but there has gone to assist where Kosovo most needs, which is in investing and expanding capacities for energy storage, energy efficiency and, above all, the involvement of girls and women in the labour market within this sector. We hope that tomorrow this week this deal will be concluded”, he said.
The Kosovo Assembly will convene tomorrow and the day after tomorrow at two different sessions. The majority insists that the agreement with the MCC be ratified as soon as possible in the Assembly. Parliament ratifys international agreements with the votes of two-thirds of all MPs.
