President Gotabaya Rajapapasa has fled Sri Lanka on a military plane accompanied by his wife.
His brother, former Finance Minister Basil Rajapapaxa, has also left the crisis-hit country, sources for the BBC said, transmitston Klankosova.tv.
The president left just days after his residence was occupied by protesters seeking his resignation.
He had vowed to leave the post Wednesday amid mass protests for the island's worst economic crisis in decades.
For months people have struggled with daily power cuts and basics such as fuel, food, and medicine
Thousands of people have come to the streets angry over the past few weeks, with many blaming the Rajapasa family and their government for the situation.
