Dendias stressed the need to address the challenges of the Western Balkans. “We all would like Bosnia and Herzegovina to be a success story, but we all know that it is potentially a powder barrel”, he said, and underlined the need for all to contribute as much to the Pristina-Belgrade dialogue as possible.
Referring to the EU enlargement process in the Western Balkans, he recalled that Greece was the first country in the region to join the EU.
“We think we have met our obligation for the Eastern Balkans: Romania, Bulgaria. But even the Western Balkans need the help of Greece, Croatia and other members to meet their European future”, he underlined.
The Greek top diplomat stressed that negotiations with Albania and Northern Macedonia have been delayed for a long time and that we have new candidacys, such as Ukraine, “should not allow us to forget how important it is for Albania and Northern Macedonia to start this process”.
“We must show that the EU is able to fulfil its promises. And there are other promises that need to be realised, such as visa liberalisation for Kosovo by the EU, which we have not fulfilled”, he said.
“The EU must be much more present in the Western Balkans”, Dendias said.
