Latvia's current military system has reached its limit. Meanwhile, we have no reason to think Russia will change its” behavior, Pabriks told reporters.
Latvia had abolished mandatory service several years after joining NATO's defence alliance. The country of less than two million people, which borders Belarus and Russia, currently has only 7,500 active soldiers and members of the National Guard, backed by 1,500 NATO troops.
Pabriks said mandatory military service will be implemented for men and will take effect next year, with some available options for meeting the requirement. /abcnews.al/
