A few hours later, Security Minister Damian Hinds also announced his resignation, saying the country needs the departure of Prime Minister Boris Johnson in order to restore “belief in democracy”.
More important than any government or leader are the standards we keep in public life and belief in democracy and public administration. Because of their serious dissolution, I have concluded that the right thing for our country and our party is that you resign as leader and as prime minister”, Hinds writes in his letter of resignation to Johnson, abcnews.al reports.
So far more than 40 ministers, deputy ministers and government officials have resigned from British Prime Minister Boris Johnsos' cabinet, writes The Guardian.
The resignations follow months of political chaos. Many opponents, including those within his Conservative Party, have called for Mr. Johnson to leave.
But, he has said he will not resign and is now in the hands of a powerful conservative group, known as the 1922 Committee, to bring it down before the next election.
Under the party's current rules, one year must pass before another motion to lift the prime minister's vote of confidence. But the committee has the power to change rules to allow a new vote of confidence faster.
Technically, it can develop in 11 months. 15% of conservative lawmakers, currently 54 deputies, should seek the head of “Kommity 1922”, Graham Brady, to seek the government's vote of confidence.
Boris Johnson survived a vote of confidence on June 6th, though 41% of conservative lawmakers voted against him, questioning his future.
Under the party's current rules, a year must pass before another formal challenge to party leader occurs.
But “Committee 1922” has the power to change rules to allow a new vote of confidence faster.
Boris Johnson will need the support of 180 out of the 359 conservative lawmakers who are in the British Parliament if a new vote of confidence is made.
If you lose, he must resign and a race is held in the party for the new leader, but he cannot run again. He will remain party leader and prime minister until a replacement is elected.
