Borrell and Blinken come up with joint statement for Albania, Northern Macedonia

“At this critical moment in European history, marked by unwarranted aggression carried out by Russia against Ukraine, advancing the route of Albania and Northern Macedonia to the EU is the key to strengthening the cohesion and sustainability of the entire European continent”, the July 9th statement said.

According to the statement, the two countries are ready to take the next step towards EU membership.

The statement reportedly welcomes a compromise proposal that takes into account the interests and concerns of Northern Macedonia and Bulgaria “based on respect, confidence and mutual understanding”.

The sovereign decision of the North Macedonia Assembly will be important to move forward. This spirit of constructive compromise on which European integration is built should continue to inspire all those involved in this historical process”, the joint statement said.

The European Union and the United States say they are committed to closer co-operation in the Western Balkans.
