Bajram Begaj, the Socialist Party's proposal, was elected president at the June 4th 2022 parliamentary session, with 78 votes for, 4 against and 1 abstention. Begaj, former chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, will be Albania's 8th president since the proclamation of pluralism.
The group of Democratic Party led by Sali Berisha confirmed they would boycott the plenary hearing of President Bajram Begaj's oath, arguing that the election of the new president was unconstitutional.
