Ukrainian presidential adviser Olexiya Arestovych said the fighting in Donbas “has reached a formidable 55x1>. Russia's attacks target the Swiss cities of Severodonjeck and Lisicansk, the last remaining positions under Ukrainian forces in the province of Luhansk.
On Friday, regional Governor Serhiy Gaidai said Ukrainian troops would have to withdraw “from the town of Severodonjekut, which is currently largely under Russian forces' control.
Staying in places destroyed for many months just for the sake of staying there makes no sense,” said Governor Serhiy Gaidai.
Russia's attack has led to an unprecedented response from the West, with sanctions aimed at the Russian financial, energy and tourism sector, among other things.
On Sunday, leaders of G7 countries will meet in Germany to further formulate their response to Russia's attacks. Next week, NATO members will meet in Spain to discuss bilateral security amid occupation, with Finland and Sweden seeking to join the alliance.
European Union leaders decided to grant Ukraine official membership candidate status in the 27-nation bloc. The EU has been largely united in supporting Ukraine since Russia invaded February 24th, adopting unprecedented economic sanctions against Moscow. Just four days after Russia began its war, Ukraine applied to become an EU member.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the decision, calling it a unique and historical moment” in relations with the European Union. “Ukraine's future is in the EU”, he wrote on Twitter. /rel
