“in many ways, the fate of Donbas is being placed there”, he said as fighting flared up in the industrial generation with Russian and separatist forces.
He added that his troops were causing major losses to enemy forces.
But according to the region's senior Ukrainian official, Ukrainian forces have been pushed back to the suburbs.
Serhiy Haidai, governor of the Luhansk region (which makes up Donbas along with the nearby Donnetsk region), said special forces were withdrawn after Russia “began to level the area with bombings and air attacks”.
Our “forces now again control only the suburbs of the town”, he told local media. “But fighting continues, our troops are protecting Severodonnetsk. It is impossible to say that the Russians fully control the city”, he added.
About 15 thousand civilians remained in Severodonnetsk and in the nearby town of Lysychansk, the governor said.
