NATO leaders will gather in Madrid on Tuesday, in what is considered to be one of the most important summits of the Western alliance in recent years, following Russia's unprotested attack on Ukraine.
Secretary - General NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, has said 27 June that at the three-day summit, compliance will be reached for a new package of aid to Ukraine in the field of communications, anti-drine and oil systems.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to speak to NATO leaders and its allies through video-link.
Turkey's blockade of Finland and Sweden's membership in the alliance is also a hot point for discussion.
Stoltenberg is expected to meet leaders of three countries before the summit begins.
Proselytized Unity NATO is under test, as Turkey, which has the second largest army in NATO after the United States, is seeking guarantees from Finland and Sweden, as regards Kurdish groups Ankara considers terrorist.
Official positions for Russia are expected to change at the summit, as by 2020, the alliance views Moscow as a strategic partner.
This will not be the case in the strategic concept of which we will agree in Madrid”, Stoltenberg said.
I expect the Allies to see clearly that Russia poses a direct threat to our security, our values and international rule based on law”.
This summit, which opens with a working dinner on June 28th, will also include heads of states that are not part of NATO, including leaders of South Korea and Japan, in the quality of observers. / REL/
