European Commission Reported Supports Ukraine's EU Membership

The European Commission is expected to support the granting of candidate status to the European Union for Ukraine next week, despite objections from Denmark and the Netherlands, Bloomberg reported on June 10th, citing anonymous sources.
Bloomberg said that persons announced on the issue said the recommendation, which should be debated and then approved by the European Union commissionary College, would be made under conditions related to the rule of law and anti-corruption laws.
Adoption by the European Commission requires agreements with member states, which according to Bloomberg, could present problems with Denmark, which has issued a diplomatic note warning that Ukraine has not met enough criticalally related to the stability of institutions guaranteeing democracy, rule of law, human rights and respect and protection of minorities.
The Netherlands has also voiced objections, the agency reported.
Ukrainian President Voldymyr Zelensky has called on the European Union to offer its state membership through a shorter procedure, adding that this would be a strong “response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The bloc's leaders are expected to discuss the issue on June 23rd and 24th.
The 27-member European Union has not expanded for almost a decade due to poor support from key states. /rel
