The European Council is the European Union's top political body, which brings together heads of state or governments of 27 EU member states.
Josep Borrell, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, said the sanctions package increased the number of “Kremlin definitions to finance the war by imposing further economic sanctions”.
“We are stopping the import of Russian oil into the EU and thereby cutting a massive source of revenue for Russia. We've made more disruptions by leading Russian banks from the international SWIFT payment system. We are also sanctioning those responsible for the crimes committed in Bucha and Marioupol and preventing more acts of deinformation actively contributing to President Putin's war propaganda”, Borrell said at a press conference Friday.
The council has also shown various areas aimed at sanctions:
Oil embargo
De - Russian and Belarusian additional banks' SWIFTing
Transmission
Export Limits
Consultancy Services
Individual Lists
The sanctions announcement came after an extraordinary European Council summit attended by EU leaders in Brussels on Monday.
