The Bulgarian Parliament has approved the French Presidency's proposal of the EU Council for the start of negotiations on North Macedonia's EU membership.
This was done through a draft submitted by the co-chair of “Democratic Bulgaria” Hristo Ivanov, in which it is said, Bulgaria will support every step of the North Macedonia European integration process in specifying the Council's negotiating framework and conclusions to ensure the inclusion of Bulgarians in the Macedonian Constitution “that other peoples are mentioned and in equal terms with these”.
Kiril Petkov's approval and acceptance by the dismissed government could lead to the removal of the veto for Skopje, enabling the EU to open membership negotiations with Albania as well.
The draft resolutions confirm support for the French proposal, but only under these conditions: to ensure the inclusion of the Bulgarian minority in the Constitution of Northern Macedonia, as do other minorities; to clearly reflect that nothing in the North Macedonia's EU membership process can be interpreted as recognition of the Macedonian language by the Republic of Bulgaria; The EU will ensure that good neighbourly relations remain a criterion during the membership process.
At that, the situation in Bulgaria's parliament is not calm, as group MPs fully express themselves against the French proposal and his approval consider a betrayal.
But the approval of the Macron plan is not expected to be a problem, as most lawmakers support it. /A2
