The World Health Organization expects <x0-level high>” COVID-19 in Europe this summer and called for careful monitoring of the virus, as the number of newly infected people has tripled every day in the last month.
“While countries across Europe abolish social measures that were in place, the virus will circulate to higher levels this summer”, O director said BSH for Europe Hans Kluge.
He said the virus will not disappear as countries have stopped controlling, that it continues to infect and kill people.
Encouraged by the subvaritor Omitron BA.5, the number of cases in about 50 WHO-covered countries, Europe reached close to 500,000 newly infected this week, while it was about 150,000 a day at the end of May, according to the world organisation.
With 4,000 and 5,000 deaths from COVID recorded each day during most of the winter, the death toll now remains at the lowest rate of 500 since the summer 2020.
Almost all European countries mark a significant increase in the number of cases, with Portugal, Luxembourg, France, Greece, Cyprus, Germany and Austria leading in the number of new cases.
“We hope that the extensive vaccine programs that most countries have had, as well as previous infections, mean that we will avoid the most severe consequences we had in the pandemic”, Cluj said.
O BSH urges Europeans to continue isolating themselves in case of respiratory symptoms, to check whether their vaccine has been updated, and to wear masks in places with many people.
